The classic Australian Drama by Michael Gow. Directed by Vanessa Jensen

It’s Christmas 1967 and the time to re-enact the rituals of the summer holiday. Three Australian families set out separately but are driven together by a storm. At times funny and yet painfully truthful, Away exposes the comedy and tragedy of their lives. Away is usually played by a cast of 10 with everyone doubling at least once (there are 20plus characters). I would like to play it with more people and less doubling, particularly for the main characters.

Away is usually performed with 8 actors plus extras as fairies and students. All 8 play double or multiple roles.
I would like to perform it with 14 actors plus extras as fairies/students/ASMs/ props people. The first 8 would only perform their main character, the next 6 would perform multiple roles, including those of fairies, students, hotel guests (anything in italics has no lines, only action).
If I cannot cast all of the second group of actors, I will have to revert to using the main characters in multiple roles but this is not my preference.
Tom and Meg are 16/17 in the play but I would like all my actors to be over 18.

Roy – 40+, school principal

Jim – 40+, Meg’s Dad
Gwen – 35+, Meg’s mum, uptight
Coral – 35+, Roy’s wife, grieving.
Harry – 40+, Tom’s Dad, English
Vic – 35+, Tom’s Mum, English
Leonie / Miss Latrobe – Any age
Rick / MC  - 25+ (also student)
Camper 1 – Male, any age (also fairy, hotel guest, student)
Camper 2  - Female, any age (also fairy, hotel guest, student)
Camper 3 - Male, any age (also fairy, hotel guest, student)
Camper 4 - Female, any age (also fairy, hotel guest, student)

Away is available in most local libraries if you wish to read it before booking an audition time. The audition will consist of readings from the script which will be handed out on the day.
