The Boys
Directed By: Dannielle Ashton
Synopsis
The Boys centre’s on the thoroughly unlikable Sprague family, headed up by the clueless mother Sandra and including her three wayward sons: the volatile Brett, the resentful Glenn, and the infantile Stevie. All of Sandra’s boys have issues with women that manifest themselves in their current relationships. Brett is suspicious of his loyal girlfriend Michelle’s fidelity. Glenn’s relationship with the controlling Jackie brings his manhood into question and Stevie finds himself trapped into marriage by his pregnant girlfriend Nola.
On the day of Brett’s homecoming from prison, the boys’ resentment towards the women in their lives quickly turns to rage. Angry and drunk, the boys head out to blow off some steam; when a young woman is found raped and murdered the following morning, the boys are arrested for the crime.
The Boys offers perhaps the most chilling depiction in Australian theatre of violence within a family, and where it may eventually lead. Amid considerable controversy, Graham has said he was writing about characters he knew from his own upbringing in Perth, but the initial inspiration came from the gang rape and murder of Anita Cobby, near Blacktown, in February 1986.
