Synopsis: Jake a novelist who is more succcessful with fiction than real-life, faces a marital crisis by dreaming about the women in his life. The wildly comic and sometimes moving flashbacks played in his mind are interrupted by visitations from the women in his life. Theres is his revered first wife, killed in a traffic accident years earlier, his daughter, recalled as a child but who is now a bossy young woman, his boisterous and bossy sister, an opinionated analyst, his current wife (who is about to leave hime for another man) and his prospective third wife.
CHARACTERS:
JAKE (40's - 50's)
This is a big role. Onstage for the whole play with lots of lines including several monologues, it requires a talented and experienced actor who can handle both comedy and drama. a somewhat selfish and self-absorbed man, Jake is inventive, imaginative with boundless recerves of energy, a quick wit and plenty of charm when needed. He goes through a wide range of emotions form joy to despair, although he often finds these difficult to express and/or articulate. (On Broadway this role was played by Alan Alda if that gives you an idea of the range and energy needed for this part!) Ultimately he does care.
MAGGIE (30's -40's)
Jakes current wife. Independent, assertive, somewhat alienated by Jake's absorption in his work and long-suffering in her tolerance of him. She has been having an afffair and is planning to leave him, albeit reluctantly as she still loves Jake.
KAREN (30's -50's)
Jake's sister. boisterous, somewhat bossy, a little dotty, a little 'alternative', yet a caring and supportive sibling. without a current partner she is still trying to find her own life
MOLLY AS A YOUNG GIRL (early teens)
Jakes daughter as a 12 year old. a quiet thoughtful mature-for-her-age girl
MOLLY AS A YOUNG WOMAN (20's)
Jake's daughter at her real age of 21. assured, independent, intelligent, insightful young woman who is deeply concerned about her father's happiness. She is somewhat direct with him and often critical of him. she never really knew her mother.
EDITH (40's - 60's0
Jake's counsellor. A bold, brassy, opinionated, no-nonsense bustling professional analyst/counsellor She knows Jake very well and can pin-point his "faults" with painful accuracy
JULIE (20's - 35)
Jake's revered first wife. Killed years earlier in a traffic accident. Perhaps a slightly idolised version of who she really was: bright, beautiful, caring, astute with youthful exuberance/innocense, but with a touch of mature wisdom that only death can bring
SHEILA (30's -40's)
Jake's 'girlfriend' A potential third wife? Strong-willed, can be forceful yet can also be very patient, but is rather out of her depth and confused by what is going on in Jake's mind.
