Hello Dolly

Auditions Saturday 19 January from 10:00 am This lively American musical, based on the play The Matchmaker by Thornton Wilder, was first performed in New York in January 1964 and later adapted into a film starring Barbra Streisand and Michael Crawford. Set in the 1890s, the story opens with Dolly Levi attempting to arrange a marriage between Horace Vandergelder and Irene Molloy, although she really has other plans for him. Horace is going to New York to meet Irene and leaving his hay and feed store in Yonkers in the charge of Cornelius and Barnaby. However, Cornelius has other ideas and also goes to New York, where he and Barnaby inevitably run into Horace. Other characters feature in the story, as described below. ROLES: Dolly Gallagher Levi An indefatigable meddling matchmaker of strikingly dramatic appearance; a widow in her middle years. Horace Vandergelder A widower of some means. Cornelius Hackl Vandergelder’s chief clerk, 33 years old.. Barnaby Tucker Assistant to Cornelius, 17 years old. Irene Molloy A millineress with a hat shop in New York, in her early 30s. Minnie Fay A young girl who works in Irene’s shop. Ernestina A heavy-set girl in need of Mrs Levi’s services. Ermengarde Horace’s 17-year-old niece. Ambrose Kemper A young artist seeking to marry Ermengarde. Mrs Rose Sells vegetables from a street cart, friend of Dolly’s from years before. Rudolph Reisenweber The Prussian major-domo of the Harmonia Gardens Restaurant. Stanley A young waiter. Judge White whiskered, red nose, New York night court. There are a few other minor roles and a chorus of townspeople, customers etc. We also need dancers. Ages quoted above are as a guide and are adaptable.
