1995. Disappearing on the day of his father’s funeral, Walker Janeway returns to New York a year later to hear the reading of his famous father’s will. Reunited with his sister, Nan and their childhood friend, Pip, Walker discovers his father’s journal and its first entry “April 1960. April 3rd to April 5th – Three days of rain” which sets the scene for this remarkable play – part drama, part mystery and unexpectedly, part romance. We are taken back to 1960 as the question is raised: how well do we really know our parents? Witty, exciting and heart breaking, this Pulitzer – nominated play is already considered a contemporary classic.
Chris requires the talents of three experienced actors – two men and one woman – in their early to mid thirties for this wonderful play.
Characters (Double-casting):
Walker Janeway: thirties. Sweet, compulsively verbal, angry, a self-described “impossible person”.
Ned Janeway: his father at the same age. Watchful, self-doubting, smart, tentative, surprising.
Nan Janeway: a year or so older than Walker. Committedly normal. Someone who has coped forever and is determined to keep doing so under very trying circumstances.
Lina: her mother at the same age. The antithesis of Nan. Sarcastic, Southern, moody. Delightful but at a cost.
Pip Wexler: thirties. Sunny, good-looking, almost helplessly happy. Embroiled in the complexities of his friends but not wrecked by them.
Theo Wexler: his father at the same age. Golden boy. Insecure about his “genius”, struggling to maintain ease. Genuinely charming but a degree of violence added to the mix.
Rehearsal nights and times are negotiable upon casting. Auditions are strictly by appointment only. Limited perusal scripts are available. Copies may also be obtained via Jenn Walter at Billy HydeÂ’s Fine Music on 9670 5391.
