Is your Queensland Agent Ripping You Off?
Fri, 9 June 2006, 06:42 pmHi,
If you've been treated poorly by a Queensland agent, I'd encourage you to read the notice below. Originally I just wanted people who had worked and had been ripped off, but I realise there are also the groups of people who've paid money to go on an agent's books, but received very little for it, so please tell me your stories too.
If you email me at brisbaneperformers@yahoo.com.au, I'll send you information on what the law is for Agents in Qld, what we intend doing, a list of questions to help you provide me with the information I'm seeking on your experience of Qld agents, and details of my own experiences.
Many thanks.
Regards,
"Brisbane Performers"
Below is the original notice:
Is your agent ripping you off?
· Is your agent charging you more than ten percent commission?
· Does your agent pay you within seven days of receiving money on your behalf?
· Have you had to threaten legal action in order to get money from an agent?
· Do you obtain timely pay information stating how much your agent received and how much he/she paid you?
Many Brisbane performers are charged 20% (plus GST) commission; receive payment months after their agents have been paid; and receive few if any pay statements. Some don’t receive payment until they threaten legal action. Many performers fear that if they ask their agent to adhere to the Regulations (particularly the 10% maximum commission), they will no longer be sent for work.
Queensland law regarding agents is summarised in a government information sheet downloadable from http://www.dir.qld.gov.au/industrial...ion/agentsreg/ . Download the pdf document (toward the bottom of the page) titled: Information for work seekers (models and performers) (If you have trouble downloading or viewing it, email brisbaneperformers@yahoo.com.au , asking for a copy, and we’ll email it to you.)
What We Can Do to Make Agents Adhere to the Regulations
I am a Brisbane performer who’s sick of agents not adhering to the Regulations. I intend submitting a document to the Department of Industrial Relations, stating the problems Brisbane performers have with agents, and stating which agents are suspected of being in breach of the Regulations. I need your help to find out which agents are in breach, and to find out what the problems are.
Please send an email to brisbaneperformers@yahoo.com.au , and I’ll send you a return email with more details, stating what information I need (ie information on your agent’s commission, fees, pay timeliness etc), and what I intend doing with this information (but only if you agree to let me). Your name will remain confidential, unless you agree to disclose it.
Together we can make it fairer for all Brisbane performers. Let’s ensure agents adhere to the Regulations, and ensure performers stop getting ripped off!
If your agent is not adhering to the Regulations, I need to hear from you. Please email brisbaneperformers@yahoo.com.au , and I’ll email you more info on what I need to know to make things fairer for all of us.
And pass this on to other Brisbane performers. The more information we gather, the more ammunition we have!
