The Department of Nothing is a 20 minute honours project at Curtin University. It is based on the same tilted story by Colin Firth, and is due to be shot in July this year. Synopsis For Henry- an eleven year old boy, isolated and friendless- his granny’s stories are the only thing that gets him through the day. But when she suffers a stroke, it is left up to him to find the end of her last story. Henry A ten year old boy. Henry is an outsider- his situation at home is bleak and at school it is even worse. But Henry is resilient; he finds comfort and escape in his granny’s stories and holds onto the magic of those tales to get him through what he calls The Department of Nothing - better known to everyone else as life. He is both insightful and imaginative. (Anyone between the ages 8-13 are very welcome to audition). Henry’s Granny 65-80 year old woman. Granny is old and a little salty, but above all she’s a bit quirky. She is sick and so confined to her bed, but it is her imagination that frees herself and Henry. Henry’s Mother A 30-45 year old woman. She is a single mum and so carrying the burden of looking after her mother and Henry, while still making ends meet. She is clearly hassled by life and gives Henry very little time.
